Ellen Fitton is a music industry veteran who has worked in many of the top NY studios like Right Track, Atlantic, The Hit Factory, Sony Music Studios and most recently Universal Mastering. She learned much of what she knows about recording bands from her days at Atlantic Studios, working with the legendary producer Arif Mardin, and his long time engineer Michael O’Reilly. Years later she would refine her skills recording classical music, learning from the late Bud Graham and producers Steve Epstein and David Frost.
Like several of the engineers at Masterdisk, Ellen got her early education at SUNY Frediona in their Tonmeister program. This wide range of training and experiences has made her the extremely versatile engineer she is today.
In her most recent position at Universal Mastering’s East Coast Facility, Ellen’s main focus was the restoration of the famed Motown catalog. Her work on The Complete Motown Singles box set series gave her the rare opportunity to remaster every (yes every) A and B side ever released on the Motown label, from its beginnings in 1959, through its heyday, and ending with the hits of 1972. This work won her a MOJO award in 2007. Ellen was also nominated for a Grammy for her work on Sony’s 100 Years Soundtrack for a Century box set.
While at Universal, Ellen’s work was not confined to Motown. She worked on projects for Donna Summer, Bob Marley, Cat Stevens, Public Enemy, Elvis Costello and the 40th anniversary release of Derek and the Dominoes' famed Layla album. Another notable album mastering from that time was Danish model/singer Anine Bing's Kill Your Darlings.
While at Universal, Ellen was also very involved in Universal’s partnership with Tunecore, not only mastering for the up-and-coming artists they represented, but often acting as a mentor to young artists making their first records.
Masterdisk is now Ellen's home base, and she looks forward to continuing her career alongside this great crew. Contact booking manager Peter Cho at (212) 541-5022 or peter@masterdisk.com to book Ellen for your next mastering project.
