Vlado Meller is one of the heavyweights of the mastering world and a 2-time Grammy Award Winner. His credits include some of the biggest cutting-edge records of our time. To get an idea of the scope of Vlado's work, let's take a look at some of his recent credits. Vlado mastered the Red Hot Chili Peppers' I'm with You (2011), Jane's Addiction's The Great Escape Artist (2011), Jackie Evancho's Dream with Me (2011), Slayer's World Painted Blood (2009), and Susan Boyle's I Dreamed a Dream (2009). How's that for range? And that's just the past few years -- there are loads of classics in his credits too.
Vlado has the expertise to find the right touch for Harry Connick Jr.'s Your Songs, and then turn around to master Kanye West's My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy (the No.1 album in Pitchfork's “Top 50 Albums of 2010”). Vlado is the engineer that got the call for both the Beastie Boys' Hot Sauce Committee Part 2 and the Cars' comeback album Move Like This. He has that kind of scope.
It's not uncommon for a mastering engineer to master different genres of music. All the great engineers can do it. But to master hit records in genre after genre: that's something special. How does Vlado do it? "For many years I was fortunate to work for companies with huge catalogs,” Vlado says. “In the course of any given day I might master Horowitz in the morning, Miles Davis in the afternoon, and a heavy metal band in the evening. Or any other genre of music! I really enjoyed that, and I still like that kind of variety. Each type of music demands a different approach in mastering. This keeps it fresh.”
